International Girls in ICT Day 2019

Since international Girls in ICT Day was first celebrated in 2011, over 357,000 girls and young women have taken part in more than 11,100 events across 171 countries. Together we have offered girls all over the world the opportunity to become inspired by ICTs and to encourage them to become future students and professionals in this sector.

Despite this important effort, however, the data show that women continue to be underrepresented in both ICT studies and careers. This is a trend the world cannot afford: there is a growing need for digital skills in nearly all professions, an increasing and often unmet demand for ICT professionals worldwide, and a global youth unemployment crisis.

For these reasons, it is important to keep up our efforts to inspire girls and young women and give them the confidence to pursue ICT careers and envision themselves as ICT creators. International Girlsin ICT Day falls on 25 April 2019 this year, and we encourage you to continue your contribution to this global effort by organizing an inspiring event to celebrate on or around this date. Your efforts will contribute to accelerating progress towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals 45 and 8.
To help you, the Girls in ICT Portal is available in all six ITU languages and provides several resources, including:
  • Visual resources, such as banners for use on social media, as well as (customizable) files for printing banners and posters.
  • Information on previous events organized around the world to inspire you.

Once again, we thank you for your commitment to the global Girls in ICT Day movement and look forward to hearing from you about your plans to celebrate Girls in ICT Day 2019.
Many thanks and best regards,
The ITU Girls in ICT Team
